In an effort to inspire local communities and drive a citizen-centred energy transition, the Citizen Energy Advisory Hub (CEAH) is undertaking a comprehensive mapping exercise.
CEAH will catalogue different types of citizen energy initiatives, based on the data of EU projects (e.g., ESPON TANDEM, Energy communities Repository) and various national organisations, including regulators, unions of cities and municipalities, energy agencies, and grid operators, CEAH aims to provide a first indication of the state of the European citizen energy landscape.
Interactive maps to showcase European initiatives
Scheduled for release by the end of 2025, the data will be presented in interactive maps, allowing users to filter by initiative type and location. They aim to serve as a valuable resource for citizens looking to create or expand their own energy projects, providing them with examples of successful initiatives from other regions. Researchers and policymakers will also benefit, using the tool to evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches and to identify frameworks that support successful citizen energy models.
“This mapping effort is critical to understanding the full scope of citizen energy across Europe,” said Leen Peeters, CEAH Quality Controller. “We want to provide a comprehensive resource that offers both inspiration and guidance to communities and policymakers alike. The maps will show how diverse regions are addressing energy challenges and offer a pathway for replicating successful initiatives.”
A platform for citizen engagement
Once the maps are launched, citizens will have the opportunity to apply to have their initiatives added to the maps on the next round of updates. This will help foster a collaborative network where lessons learned and best practices can be exchanged, further supporting the growth of citizen-centred energy solutions throughout Europe.
“This is an exciting opportunity for communities to showcase their projects and connect with others who are working toward similar goals,” Leen added. “By sharing experiences, we can learn together and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy future.”
